DMVA Gives Last Call For Those Who Served In The Persian Gulf War To Apply For Bonus:
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is giving its last call to those who served in the Persian Gulf War. For retired Marine veteran Joseph Staudt, who was a part of operation desert storm, he remembers what it was like when they came home. "When we first came back our representatives recognized us down at the Capitol building," he reminisces. Read more.
 
PA National Guard/DMVA Leaders Visit Deployed Members Of 28th Infantry Division In Kuwait:
Pennsylvania's top two military leaders recently flew to Kuwait to learn about the mission of Pennsylvania National Guard members deployed to the Gulf region. The Adjutant General, Air Force Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli, and Senior Enlisted Advisor Joint Command Sgt. Maj. Harry Buchanan visited Task Force Spartan troops Aug. 2-3. Task Force Spartan is currently led by the headquarters battalion of 28th Infantry Division, a Pennsylvania Army National Guard unit. Read more.

'You Learn To Appreciate That There Is A God': 100 Years Of Heroes:
Henry Thomas, 91, of Camp Hill (Cumberland County), is a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He joined the Navy in January 1945 at age 17, and after boot camp and training was sent to Japan, where he saw the remnants of heavily bombed Tokyo, and both Nagasaki and Hiroshima after they were destroyed by atomic bombs. Thomas was assigned to ships island-hopping in the Philippines to inform the residents that the war was over before he returned to Allentown, Pennsylvania. Read more.
 
American Legion Holds Fundraiser To Help Homeless Veterans:
People in Bradford County came out for a great cause. The American Legion in Wyalusing hosted its fifth annual fundraiser for homeless veterans. The fundraiser featured a car show, vendors, auction and food. Those we spoke with say helping out veterans in need is the least they could do. Read more.
 
Motorcycle Ride Helps Organization Build Homes For Wounded Veterans:
Motorcycle riders gathered for the 15th annual Texas Roadhouse Bike Run event to benefit wounded veterans. It started at the chain restaurant's location near the York Galleria Mall in Springettsbury Township (York County). The ride benefits the "Homes for our Troops" organization that builds homes for disabled and severely wounded veterans across the country. Read more.
 
New Castle Woman Secures High Veterans Of Foreign Wars (VFW) Honor:
Acquiring a high position in the VFW takes some effort. Endorsements from four different levels of the organization and from different conference regions of the country must take place, and candidates can even run against one another. New Castle, PA (Lawrence County) resident Ruth A. Fairchild successfully completed those steps, and in turn, was elected National Surgeon General of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States at the 119th VFW national convention held last month in Kansas City, MO. The Tale Of Bill Wynne And 'Smoky The War Dog':
When Army Air Force veteran Bill Wynne bought a scraggly little puppy from another soldier in Nadzab, New Guinea, in 1943, he never could have imagined the little Yorkie becoming an internationally recognized war dog more than 50 years later. “Another guy’s Jeep broke down out in the jungle,” the retired newspaper photographer/writer said. “He was under the hood, trying to fix it, when he heard this whimpering in the tall grass. He found this tiny dog trying to climb out of an abandoned fox hole.” Read more.

Steve Doudt took a step and jumped into nothing. It was one of the last steps he’d take with his own legs. The Air Force combat controller was on his sixth and final “high altitude, low opening” parachute jump with Army special operations troops from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Anthony Guerrero, a chaplain serving the 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania National Guard provides spiritual and counseling services to soldiers training at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA. Forever GI Bill Expands VA Educational Benefits:
Effective Aug. 1, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented 15 more provisions of the Harry W. Colmery Educational Assistance Act of 2017, also referred to as the Forever GI Bill. These provisions, in addition to the 13 implemented since the law was signed less than a year ago, will have an immediate and positive impact on veterans and their families using VA benefits to pursue their educational goals. Former NFL Star Shows His Love And Respect For Veterans:
Upon receiving the call a few months ago, former National Football League star running back Earnest Byner felt honored to be tapped for the role. He had been selected as a guest speaker during the annual “Parade of Athletes” at the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Albuquerque, NM. Byner is the founder of The Healing Dawgs, a non-profit group that is aimed at teaching, helping, and healing through humanitarian efforts in communities, with a special focus on veterans, the homeless, and youth. Green Bay Packers Legend Gives Shout Out To Veterans:
Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre has lots of numbers from his football career – 6,000 completed passes for 70,000 yards and 500 touchdowns. But one lesser known number may have prevented him from playing at all. He broke a vertebra and lost three feet of intestines after a car accident before his senior year of college. Read more.
 
Smokers Hazy On Actual Benefits Of Lung Cancer Screenings:
Regular cancer screenings can lower the chance of death from lung cancer but they cannot reduce the risk of developing lung cancer for people who smoke. Patients who smoke seem to be confused about the actual benefits and limitations of lung cancer screenings. Researchers asked smokers a series of questions about smoking and lung cancer screening. Veteran’s Service Spanned From Vietnam To Iraq:
John C. Turner was so determined to keep himself out of the coal mines and brass factories of West Virginia that he joined the U.S. Army even before his draft card arrived, and stayed on to serve not only in Vietnam, but through the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
