Changes coming to TRICARE Retiree dental & vision programs

Do you have TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) coverage now? If so, then you need to know that the TRDP will end on Dec. 31, 2018. Not to worry — Anyone who was in TRDP this year or would have been eligible for the plan will be able to choose a dental plan from among 10 dental carriers in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). You can begin reviewing program options now at www.opm.gov/fedvip. You’ll be able to enroll in FEDVIP during the 2018 Federal Benefits Open Season, which runs from Nov. 12 to Dec. 10, 2018; coverage will begin on Jan. 1, 2019.
Previously, FEDVIP wasn’t available to Department of Defense beneficiaries, but it will now be available to those who would have been eligible for TRDP. As an added bonus, they will also be able to enroll in FEDVIP vision coverage, along with most active duty family members.
More than 3.3 million people are currently covered by FEDVIP. You can choose from dental plans offered by 10 different carriers. To enroll in FEDVIP Vision, you must be enrolled in a TRICARE health planYou can decide if one of four vision plans meets your family’s needs.
You may only enroll in a FEDVIP plan outside of open season if you experience a Qualifying Life Event that allows you to do so. Any election in a FEDVIP plan remains in effect for the entire calendar year.

Governor Tom Wolf announced the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry’s Apprenticeship and Training Office has approved two new apprenticeship programs in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. These programs underscore the governor’s commitment to increasing job training opportunities for Pennsylvanians. “Apprenticeships provide paid, on-the-job training in industries where skilled workers are in extremely high demand,” said Governor Wolf.

Individuals filing their 2017 Pennsylvania personal income taxes can help Pennsylvania’s military personnel and their families by donating part or all of their refund to the state’s Military Family Relief Assistance Program. Flying High – Rodgers, Smead Earn Air Assault Wings: 
Two Pennsylvania National Guard members, Spc. Tate Rodgers and Sgt. Tyler Smead, both from McKean County, completed the Air Assault School held at Fort Indiantown Gap and earned their Air Assault wings recently. The men are members of the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. “It was challenging, but it was a worthwhile experience,” Rodgers said. Read more.

Governor Tom Wolf Launches Program To Help Small Diverse Businesses: 
Governor Tom Wolf announced the launch of the Commonwealth’s Mentor-Protégé Program for Small Diverse Businesses. Diverse businesses include ones owned by Pennsylvania veterans. The program pairs successful prime contractors with small diverse businesses to better develop their capabilities to compete for state government contracting opportunities. “We have a responsibility to ensure that opportunities to compete for state contracting is diverse, inclusive, and fair,” Governor Wolf said. Army Veteran Seeks To Inspire Others Through Adaptive Sports: 
Deanna Callender has learned to focus without sight. In 2007, the Army and Army National Guard veteran was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that would eventually take her eyesight. The news was anything but tragic for her. “As it got worse, it became a blessing,” Callender says. Read more.
Gulf War Veterans – Research Volunteers Needed: 
Researchers at the New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center are actively trying to develop better treatments for Gulf War veterans with Gulf War Illness (GWI). GWI is a term that refers to a group of unexplained or ill-defined chronic symptoms found in about one third of veterans deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield (1990-91). Read more.

Remote Veteran Apnea Management Platform: 
Army veteran Walter Broadnax recently found Sleep Apnea Relief. “I wake up joyful,” says Broadnax, “I forgot what it was like to get eight solid hours of sleep." Broadnax, who receives his medical care at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Medical Center in Philadelphia, has Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which is estimated to be the third most common chronic disease among veterans. OSA is associated with an increased risk of hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, depression, and driving accidents. Read more.

U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs (VA) To Increase Veterans’ Access To Mental Health Services: 
In partnership with the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, VA is planning to give all new veterans access to mental health care for at least one year after their completed military service, regardless of disability status. As of now, patients must be enrolled in the VA health care system to receive the full suite of counseling options.
