Westmoreland County Land Bank Welcomes City of Monessen

GREENSBURG (August 25) - The Board of Directors of the Westmoreland County Land Bank today announced that the City of Monessen is the latest municipality to join the countywide Land Bank along with the Monessen School District. This brings the Land Bank’s total member count to 25 municipalities and 15 school districts within Westmoreland County.

“The partnership with the Westmoreland County Land Bank is an exciting step for the city, this is something I have been wanted to see happen for several years, and I’m glad we have finally accomplished it with the help of City Council and the Monessen School District”, says Matt Shorraw, Monessen Mayor. He continues, “I am hopeful, the through the land bank, we will be able to help potential homeowners and entrepreneurs obtain vacant properties that have fallen through the cracks and been tied up with absentee owners, liens, and other issues.”

Municipalities often find themselves in difficult predicaments when trying to acquire blighted properties in areas targeted for redevelopment, and a Land Bank can offer the tools and powers necessary to make that kind of redevelopment possible. The Westmoreland County Land Bank in coordination with the Redevelopment Authority help build healthy and whole communities through blight demolition, rehabilitation, acquisition and the repurposing of vacant, tax-delinquent structures.

Westmoreland County Land Bank Executive Director Brian Lawrence adds, “The Land Bank is enthusiastic about its new partnership with the City of Monessen. By utilizing Land Bank powers with the city’s blight study, we look forward to stabilizing and promoting development in a community plagued by blight.”
