New Administrator Named for Westmoreland Manor

The Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners today announced a new administrator for Westmoreland Manor, the county-owned 408-bed nursing home and geriatric hospital. John Austin of Murrysville will begin service in mid-April.

"I am most confident in the decision that we made since the employees and residents were involved right beside us during the interview process,” said Commissioner Gina Cerilli. “Ultimately, everyone was impressed with John Austin. He has more than 15 years of experience as a nursing home administrator and will be a fresh face at the Manor."

“John Austin has a successful record in managing nursing homes,” said Commissioner Ted Kopas. “He knows patient care is the top priority, but also recognizes the financial challenges of county government. He will find the proper balance. John Austin has the experience and leadership skills to return Westmoreland Manor to the five-star facility it once was, and will be again.”

"The unanimous selection of John Austin as administrator is another positive move to return Westmoreland Manor to five -star status,” said Commissioner Charles Anderson. “Things are moving forward, and I expect a bright future for the Manor."

John Austin has a lifetime of experience in nursing homes, first learning the importance of quality care by helping out as a youth at his family’s two nursing homes in northeastern Ohio. He has more than 15 years of experience in administration.

Since 2013 he has served as the Administrator at Sugar Creek Rest in Armstrong County, where he increased patient census and revenue, drastically reduced staff turnover and oversaw a multi-million dollar renovation project. He has also served in senior management positons at Baldwin Health Center, HCR Manor Care and Hempfield Manor.

Austin was awarded the AHCA Bronze Star for quality in 2014.

He is graduate of Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and earned his Nursing Home Administrator License through his studies at Ohio State University.

Though approved by the Commissioners, Austin will be an employee of Premier Healthcare Resources – a private management company based in Penn Township. Premier is currently providing an interim administrator.

Austin was selected after a vast search of qualified administrators. In addition to interviewing with County Commissioners, he was also interviewed by a panel that included Manor management staff, union employees, Premier and Manor residents.

Austin, 41, is native of northeastern Ohio, who currently resides in Murrysville with his wife, Amy, and their eight-year-old son, Jack.
